Retire.Portfolio Desk
How it works

Every screen, in the order you meet it.

Four screens you use, one you set once. Everything else is behind a More menu.

1 · Set up, once

Four steps, one at a time.

  • Your plan. Drop the Income Lab report from your coach, or type six numbers: household, monthly paycheck, this year's withdrawals by account type, and the plan's limits if it has them.
  • Your accounts. One file per account. Taxable accounts need the brokerage's cost-basis download. IRAs and Roths need positions only. You can also type holdings in.
  • Your cash reserve. Where the paycheck is paid from, the floor that triggers a refill, the target it fills to, and how often to refill.
  • Done. Home takes over.
Set up: four numbered steps with the current one open
2 · Home, every month

One number, one next step, two balances.

The big number is months of cash in the reserve. The bar shows the floor and the target. Under it, one next step: usually "save this month's two numbers", sometimes "run a refill".

The two numbers are the total of your accounts and the cash in your paycheck account. From those the desk checks the paycheck against the plan's limits and the reserve against the floor. No upload needed.

Below: the paycheck, the next refill and the target portfolio, each with a one-word status.

3 · Refill, when the reserve is low

The trade list, lot by lot.

A refill is sized to bring the reserve back to target, split across account types the way your plan draws them, and capped at what the plan has left this year. Then the desk picks the shares:

  • Cash you already hold, first
  • Then lots with a loss
  • Then long-term gains, smallest gain per dollar first, inside your room for the year
  • Short-term gains last, with a warning

Every row says why. Below the list: the tax estimate, any Medicare tier crossed, and a checklist for your brokerage. "I placed these trades" records the gains for the year.

4 · Target portfolio

Your own mix, your own funds, a paced move.

The Portfolio tab. Four blocks on one screen: the asset mix you want, the funds you want to own and which account each belongs in, each holding marked keep or move out, and the transition plan.

IRA, Roth and HSA holdings move right away, since there is no tax. Taxable holdings go losses first, then lowest gain first, inside the year's gain room. Choose the pace: stay inside the room, finish in a set number of years, or all at once. Refills sell from the move-out list first.

5 · The plan PDF

Two pages you can hand to anyone.

More › Download plan prints the reserve, the paycheck, this refill's trades with the exact shares, a before-you-trade checklist, the money flow between accounts, and the plan's limits. With Privacy view on, names and amounts print blurred.

6 · Your data

Sealed on your device.

An account and a passcodeSign up with an email and set a six-digit passcode. The passcode never leaves your device.
Encrypted before it goes anywhereYour desk is AES-256 encrypted on your device. Only the sealed copy syncs to your account. The server and your coach see ciphertext.
Nothing else leavesStatements are read in your browser and never uploaded. The page makes no third-party requests.
A recovery codeShown once at set up. If you forget the passcode, the recovery code is the only way back in. Nobody can reset it for you.

Questions

The ones that come up.

Do I need an Income Lab plan?

No. If you have one, the desk reads it. If not, type six numbers.

Which brokerages does it read?

Fidelity, Schwab and Vanguard statements and lot reports are read directly. Any other brokerage works with its cost-basis CSV, or by typing the holdings in.

Does it place trades?

No. It gives you a specific-lot instruction to place yourself. Set the account's cost-basis method to specific lots first so the brokerage sells the shares the desk chose.

What tax rules does it know?

Long-term versus short-term by the calendar, the 0/15/20% capital gains lines, net investment income tax, the Medicare income tiers, the $3,000 loss offset and carryforward, Schedule D netting order, wash sales across accounts, withholding on IRA withdrawals, and the required-minimum-distribution and 59½ notes. Figures are updated each January. It estimates; your tax professional confirms.

Can my coach see my desk?

Not unless you show them. You can screen-share or send the plan PDF. The desk itself is sealed to your passcode.

What if I only want to look?

Open the desk and choose an example household. Nothing you do with an example is saved.
